Catching on the Mid Bay
Capt. Bill Kassakatis and I had to take advantage of what we classify as a beautiful day to catch fish. The sky was cloudy, the barometer was on the rise, and it was one day before a full moon. The water was 71.2 degrees on the Chesapeake Bay, making September 27, 2004 a good combination of the right factors needed to catch fish…all day long.
We arrived at the ramp around 9 AM and fished until 6 PM. We wasted no time in finding some large schools of striped bass with bluefish mixed in. Unfortunately there were no trout underneath.
The majority of the time you will see some baitfish above schooling fish.

Around 2 PM we decided to topwater pop the skinny waters and Capt. Bill landed a nice striper.

It appeared that at around 5:30 PM the front was coming over as the fishing got slow, so we called it another great day on the Chesapeake Bay.
All fish were taken with lures on light spinning tackle with the most productive lure being a Hopkins Shorty, Silver, 1.5 (1 1/2 ounce) jigging spoon.
Fishing Tip:
On a chart
look for the depth change lines that are very close to each other. Check these
locations out and you might find schools like the ones shown above.
