Quality Stripers in the Upper Chesapeake Bay
Dirk and I launched at 5PM, Sunday, 8/8/04 on the upper Chesapeake Bay. The weather was great, but the water was rough while boating to the first structure. Not the ride just the water.
The fish finder lit up when we arrived at the first structure. Showing fish marks from top to bottom in 18’ of water. We made a few drifts, catching striped bass to 14”, cast after cast. The most productive lure was a 4”, Bass Assassin fished on a 1/2 ounce jighead.
There is an old saying, ‘not to leave active fish’, but we were in search of quality stripers as the sun was moving toward the west horizon what seemed to be at a very fast pace.
We moved south approximately 3 miles where we hit the mother load of striped between 18 to 25 inches. Catching went on for 1 hour before dark set. All fish were healthy and fought hard. None had any sores on them.
The most productive lure was a Hopkins, Shorty, gold spoon. 3 techniques were needed to lure these fish into taking the baits.
