Fishing Turns Into Catching
Capt. Bill Kassakatis and I arrived at the Chesapeake Beach Marina, on 7/9/04 and launched at 7:45 AM. On the trip down from Baltimore, we discussed a variety of locations that, after studying a good chart, appeared to hold active striped bass.
After fishing a variety of structures, such as shoals, sandbars, ledges, down trees, points, shell bars, etc., we located active fish around noon. The water clarity was 4’ and the current was moving very swiftly across this shoal in depths deeper than 15’.
At times the top water was boiling.
We were bailing striped bass and bluefish for the next hour and a half. They ranged from 16” to 28” and all were landed on light spinning tackle. The productive lures were 4” and 5”,Bass Assassins, along with Hopkins spoons.
The water temperature was 82.3 degrees. After the rockfish stopped hitting, we fished for croakers on the bottom with squid.
Throughout the morning we were fishing hard. This made it possible for us to have a very productive afternoon. The cooler had a nice variety of saltwater fish just waiting for the table.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Tom Hughes
