Learning New Techniques Paid Off
On Friday, June 25, 2004, I was on the road by 4:30 AM headed to Sandy Point State Park, one of the best ramp locations in the State of Maryland. It's located on the west side of the Bay Bridges just off of Rt. 50. You will not have to wait to launch, or to load you're boat at the end of your fishing trip. There is plenty of parking available, along with facilities for the whole family.
Bob and Rob were in pursuit of landing striped bass on light spinning tackle, using lures in and around the South River. The first stop was the rock pile under the Bay Bridge. I wanted to teach them a highly productive technique for this structure. The wind was blowing against the tide, causing the Bay to kick up some 3 foot waves that made it impossible, so we headed into the South River.
The current turned around and we returned to the Bay around 11:00 AM. We stopped at the Thomas Point Lighthouse as Bob landed the first striper for the day. Within the next 15 minutes, Bob’s son Rob stuck a nice fish which put up a good fight before being landed.
It was a pleasure teaching new light tackle techniques, which paid off for both anglers prior to the end of their fishing trip.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Tom Hughes
